Sarah Kuhlmann is an opera singer based in Minneapolis-Saint Paul. She is deeply passionate about arts advocacy and ensuring that opera is accessible to everyone. She received her BM in Vocal Performance, her MA in Nonprofit Leadership and Arts Administration, and her MM in Opera Performance from Oklahoma City University.
Her major roles include Musetta in La bohème, Magda in La Rondine, Magda in The Consul, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, Almera in Dark Sisters, and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte.
Biography
Sarah Kuhlmann is an opera singer based in Minneapolis-Saint Paul. She is deeply passionate about arts advocacy and ensuring that opera is accessible to everyone. Sarah has performed professionally as a young artist and also in regional opera houses throughout the midwestern United States. She holds a BM in Vocal Performance, an MA in Nonprofit Leadership and Arts Administration and an MM in Opera Performance, all from Oklahoma City University.
In the Fall of 2023, Sarah is excited to move to the Twin Cities area and make her regional debut with Journey North Opera, singing Eliza in their production of Dark Sisters. Having performed the role of Almera in 2017, this production will be Sarah’s second time performing in this opera, which is of one of her favorite contemporary pieces.
Since her graduation in Spring of 2021, Sarah has worked consistently as both a Young Artist and a community organizer. During the Winter of 2023, Sarah was engaged as a Young Artist by Cedar Rapids Opera for their special soap opera themed production of Così fan tutte. From January 2022 until the Spring of 2023, Sarah was engaged as one of the inaugural Community Artists with Painted Sky Opera in Oklahoma City. While there, she understudied and performed Nedda in I Pagliacci and worked with an incredible team to organize and perform community concerts, events, and even a fully produced, touring children’s opera. Before the pandemic, Sarah also performed semi-regularly with Heartland Opera Theatre in Joplin, Mo. She made her professional debut there in 2019, singing Musetta in La bohème. She was asked to return to HOT the following year to sing Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi.
In January of 2022, Sarah started her freelance grant writing company, Musings Grant Strategies. Her work allows her to advocate and fundraise for the organizations and social causes that she cares about. She has written and contributed to grants that have raised millions of dollars for numerous social and educational projects in Oklahoma City. Sarah received her BM in Vocal Performance from Oklahoma City University, where she attended on a full scholarship. While there, she sang Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Magda in La Rondine, and Almera in Nico Muhly’s Dark Sisters. She graduated in 2017.
During the 2017/18 academic school year, Sarah received her MA in Nonprofit Leadership and began serving her community as an arts advocate and fundraiser. In addition to organizing numerous community events and performances, she worked for an umbrella fundraising organization called Allied Arts, where she collaborated with an incredible team to raise over $500,000 for the arts, two years in a row.
In the Fall or 2019, Sarah returned to Oklahoma City University, where she was granted a full scholarship and community performance stipend for her MM in Opera Performance. The Covid-19 pandemic made typical seasonal performances difficult, but she did sing Magda in The Consul before graduating in the Spring of 2021.
Sarah has been deeply passionate about opera since childhood and is grateful for any opportunity to share her beloved art form with others. She hopes to continue doing so for many years to come.
